Theoretically, any type of business can be franchised. This doesnt necessarily imply that any business could turn into a successful franchise. A flourishing franchise is generally built around certain concepts, business systems and innovative brands. They are supposed to bring in innovative approaches to an already existing concept and the food industry is the best example.

The financial implications should be also carefully measured, so that the situations where the franchisees taxes to his franchiser could act as a hurdle to securing a correctly controlled business might be avoided. An appropriately controlled company is instrumental in getting a viable franchise. A restaurant or a coffee shop is a long-standing tradition kind of business. When Wimpy got on the British market in 1950, the new type of approach (restricted menu, mainly made up of a few courses but very good ones) turned this business into a successful one. The American market where there are at least 20 types of such licensed operations in the food industry offers another example. The goal of the franchise is to fill in a gap, a market niche with a hard to get or inexistent service or product. Timing is also an important factor. The moment of launching such a product or service on the market should be carefully selected. What would be the point of bringing in a product or a service, which people are no longer looking for or need? The short-term trendy concepts are no longer a solution either, as they might turn out to be short lived. Generally, the following conditions should be met for a business to be franchised:
- The concept, the products and services included must have proved their success in practice
- The public image, the system and the methods the business relies on should be peculiar
- The revenue after operating the franchise should be high enough to enable the franchisee to get back his investments in the franchise.
- The franchisee should be able to make a decent outcome out of the franchise, so his efforts and work get finally paid off.
- The license should allow the franchisee to make a profit so that he may be able to pay the royalties to the franchiser.
- The revenue secured by the franchiser out of the entire operation should be high enough to cover the franchisers obligations and offer a reasonable profit.
- The person trying to operate a license should be cautious. Many of the business opportunities offered in good faith are generally depicted as franchise opportunities. Other business opportunities are not offered in good faith and are wrongly depicted, in disguise as franchise opportunities
Certain operations, such as the sales agencies, distribution points, sales representative offices have all certain franchise related element, still an important element is missing, such as the uninterrupted relationship, the business structure and the system that turns the business into a franchise.
Regardless of the type of business, each new franchiser finds out that the moment he or she licensed his/her business, he or she gets into a new realm. No matter the method the franchiser is using to make money, he has a twofold role: to sell licensees and to offer his services to his franchisees. Of the two, the most important thing is to ensure the success of his franchisees, as the key to a franchise success is the success of the franchisees. Without successful franchisees, no franchise system will last. But if the interest of the franchisees comes first, the same franchisees can help you become the next McDonalds
